- Before configuring the Brother printer, first, understand the wireless network (WLAN) access point/router setting.

Wireless Direct will let you connect your printer to your computer or mobile device directly without a Wi-Fi router/access point; the printer works as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Make sure the Wireless Direct settings of the printer. After you connect to a mobile device, use a Windows or Mac computer to confirm your settings.
For Windows PCs.
- Connect the printer and the computer with the USB cable. Open the printer setup tool on your computer and touch the communication settings button.
- Make sure that wireless addresses are selected for the selected Interface on the General tab. See the FAQ: “Using communication settings (for Windows)” for more information about communication settings.
For Mac computers
- Connect the printer and the computer with the USB cable. Open the Printer Setting Tool on your computer and confirm that Wireless Direct is set to On in the Wireless LAN tab. (This is selected as the factory default setting.)
- Click and hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer for one second to enable Wi-Fi.
- The Wi-Fi signal starts flashing blue every three seconds.
- Use your computer or mobile device to select the printer SSID.
- Once the connection is established, the Wi-Fi indicator lights up blue.
Connecting Brother to WiFi Printer: Infrastructure Mode
Infrastructure mode allows you to connect the printer to a computer or mobile device through a Wi-Fi router/access point. Before you begin, you must configure your printer’s Wi-Fi settings to communicate with your Wi-Fi hotshot/router. After configuring the printer, computers or mobile devices in your network will have access to the printer.

First, enter the SSID (network name) and password (network key) of your Wi-Fi hotspot/router.
- Connect the printer and the computer using the USB cable.
- Press and hold the (Wi-Fi) button on the printer for one second to turn on the Wi-Fi function. The Wi-Fi signal starts flashing blue every three seconds.
- Configure the printer’s Infrastructure Mode settings.
- For Windows, PCs Open the printer setup tool on your computer and touch the communication settings button. Choose wireless LAN for the selected interface on the General tab and select Infrastructure for communication mode in Wireless settings on the wireless LAN tab.
For Mac computers
Open the wireless device setup device included in the printer driver package, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
- If you have not downloaded the printer driver package yet, go to the Downloads page to download the package. Double-click the downloaded file. The Wireless Device Configuration Wizard can be found in the Utility folder.
- Type the SSID you have noted or click Search and select the SSID from the list displayed.
- Enter your password as your password.
- Click Apply Once the connection between the Brother printer and your Wi-Fi access router is set up, the Wi-Fi sign lights up blue. Computers and mobile devices on the same network as the printer will have access to the printer.
